The Riverhead Experience

Scroll down for more information

A unique ferry excursion following the route of the early settlers

Cruise up the Upper Harbour leaving central Auckland behind as you slide under the Auckland Harbour Bridge, cruise past the Chelsea Sugar Factory and leave Herald Island to port venturing up the sheltered waterways to the very top of the harbour. Following the path of the ancient Maori, you’ll arrive at the private dock of one of New Zealand’s Oldest Taverns that has been delivering travellers and locals with convivial hospitality of over 160 years.

Allow 5.5hours for your round trip including 2.5hours spent at The Riverhead enjoying our kiwi hospitality. We have 3 separate venues on site. Each one with its own ambiance and designed to meet differing requirements - scroll down to read more.

As the upper harbour is tidal, there are only certain times that the ferries can come to the Tavern and these change each day. If the tides time don’t suit you, it’s just a quick and pleasant drive; only 20 minutes from central Auckland.

This website takes bookings for scheduled public trips - private charters, large groups and Christmas Function sailings must be booked direct with the Ferry companies - see FAQ for details.

Our Dining Experience

For groups of 1-14 people

The Landing is an a la carte dining experience. Warm in winter, and cool in summer with large cascading decks (both covered and uncovered) that look out over the water.

As The Landing Restaurant is a dining experience we suggest that groups wishing to mix and mingle meet first in The Portage Bar, or remain there enjoying its more relaxed environment.

Please note that our largest tables seat 14 people so larger groups will be sat on separate tables, and potentially served at separate times.
Maximum group size of 28 people is accepted in The Landing (split over two tables)

Our Friendly Neighbourhood Bar Experience

For groups of up to 40 people

The perfect place to relax and mix & mingle.

We offer a comprehensive range of premium & craft beers, wines and cocktails with sharing platters and bar food to compliment. With bar leaners & stools, pool tables, a smoking area in our barrel garden and shaded veranda.

Portage bar seating is on a "first in, first served" basis, we do however set aside some space for ferry arrivals and if you have a group over 15 people you will have your own leaners set aside. Please note that Portage isn't a 'seated' venue, if you are after a sit down dining experience we suggest The Landing.

Our Sunday Festive Experience

Most Sundays - (Not in July & August)

The Boat House is our Functions and Events area which we open to the public most Sundays and some public holidays, to the public to enjoy. The Conservatory and Marquee are within The Boat House grounds.

The Boat House is a very special place to meet friends and family with live music most Sundays from 1-5pm and it’s free to enter. With a large lawn (summer months), decks over-looking the water and the shade of 100-year-old oak trees, the whole family can have a relaxed and enjoyable Sunday afternoon with room to move around.

Sunday Live is a casual atmosphere with seating on a "first in, first served" basis, we do however reserve an area for ferry arrivals and groups over 20 people.
Larger groups have the option of hiring a semi private space; The Conservatory for groups up to 40 people, or The Marquee during summer months for groups 40+
